Betting on the Detroit Tigers (48-57)
The Detroit Tigers returned to winning ways Tuesday with a thrilling 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees. Justin Upton homered for the 18th time this season to lift the Tigers to their third win in their last four games. The Tigers will look to carry the momentum of that huge victory when they lock horns with the Yankees in their series finale later today.
Pitching for the Tigers in this encounter is Jordan Zimmermann (6-8, 5.69 ERA). He was solid in his last start against the Houston Astros, allowing just three runs on six hits in seven innings of work. The Tigers couldn’t turn Zimmermann’s strong performance into a victory, however, as they suffered a gut-wrenching 6-5 loss. That defeat capped off a miserable month for Zimmermann who posted a 6.23 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in July. The Tigers have now lost four of their last five games with Zimmermann as their starter.
With Zimmermann struggling with his command right now, the onus is on the Detroit hitters to provide some crucial run support today. Expected to lead the Tigers offense in the series decider against the Yankees is the red-hot Upton. He leads the Tigers not only in homers (18) but also in batting average (.280), on-base percentage (.369), hits (101) and RBIs (68) this campaign. Upton is 7-of-26 in his last seven games with three homers and eight RBIs.
Betting on the New York Yankees (57-48)
Starting for the Yankees in the final game of this three-game set is Masahiro Tanaka (8-9, 5.09 ERA). The Japanese ace dazzled in his last start against the Tampa Bay Rays, striking out a career-high 14 batters and surrendering just one run in eight innings of action. Tanaka was locked in right from the get-go, retiring the first 17 batters he faced. It was a morale-boosting performance by Tanaka who gave up at least six earned runs in both of his previous starts against the Rays this season. The Japanese star is 5-4 with a 4.28 ERA in 10 starts at Yankee Stadium this campaign.
Tanaka can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the Yankee hitters to step up their play today. One guy who needs to contribute for the Bronx Bombers is Todd Frazier. The third baseman is 5-of-18 in his career against Detroit starter Jordan Zimmermann with two homers and four RBIs. Another player who’s swinging the bat well for New York is Didi Gregorious. He went 2-of-4 last night with a homer and three RBIs in the loss to the Tigers. Gregorius will be licking his chops at the prospect of facing Zimmermann as he is .300 in his career against the Tigers starter with one homer and a couple of RBIs to boot.
Writer’s Prediction
