Betting on the New York Yankees (57-49)
All eyes will be on Progressive Field Thursday night as Sonny Gray finally makes his much-anticipated debut for the New York Yankees. The 27-year-old was acquired from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for three highly-touted prospects – infielder Jorge Mateo, outfielder Dustin Fowler and right-hander James Kaprielian. The Bronx Bombers hope that Gray will give them a much-needed boost for their playoff push. He is 6-5 with a 3.43 ERA in 16 starts this season, having thrown at least six innings in 12 of those games while allowing two earned runs or fewer on 10 occasions. The former All-Star went 4-2 with a 1.37 ERA over his final six starts for the A’s.
The Yankees are 6-4 in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the Cleveland Indians (57-48)
Pitching for Cleveland in the series opener is Corey Kluber. He was simply spectacular in the month of July, going 1-1 with a 2.62 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 34.1 innings in five starts. After setting a career-best mark with a 13.4 K/9 in June, the right-hander topped that with a 14.7 K/9 last month. Over Kluber’s last 11 outings, opponents are slashing just .177/.224/.275 over 292 plate appearances. Kluber will fancy his chances of extending that excellent form against the Yankees as he will be pitching at Progressive Field. The Indians’ home turf has been kind to Kluber this season with the 31-year-old veteran posting an impressive 6-1 record and 2.38 ERA there.
The Indians are 9-1 in their last 10 home games.
