Betting on the New York Mets
With all the hurt bodies on the Mets’ starting rotation, Seth Lugo (5-2, 4.10 ERA) has been one of those called from the bullpen to moonlight as a starter this season. Lugo has been doing a decent job on the mound of late, as the right-hander is 2-0 with a 3.26 ERA in his last three appearances, all of which were quality starts.
Lugo last saw action on Jul. 25, when he helped the Mets to a 6-5 road win over the San Diego Padres, tossing for six innings and giving up three earned runs (two were homers) on eight hits. In six total road appearances on the season, Lugo is 4-1 with a 4.68 ERA.
Jose Reyes and Jay Bruce will look to provide Lugo a comfortable run cushion the Mets failed to provide Jacob deGrom during Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Mariners. Reyes is batting .298 in 23 games this month, while Bruce is hitting .247 with seven homers and 18 RBI’s this July.
Betting on the Seattle Mariners
James Paxton (10-3, 2.84 ERA) is silently stringing together a dominant stretch yet remains a very underrated starter in baseball today. He could care less though, so long as the Mariners keep on winning every time he takes the mound. In five starts this July, Paxton is 5-0 with a 1.62 ERA to go with 38 strikeouts.
Paxton tamed the bats of the Boston Red Sox on Jul. 24, surrendering zero runs and just four hits in seven innings of a 4-0 win at Safeco Field. The southpaw Paxton is 6-2 with a 2.36 ERA in 10 starts at home so far this season.
Seattle’s leadoff batters in Jean Segura and Ben Gamel have been money at the plate of late. Segura is 31-for-102 (.304) with eight doubles and four stolen bases in July. Game, on the other hand, is 8-for-25 (.320) in his last six games.
Writer’s Prediction
New York (+185) trips up Paxton and the Mariners with a 4-3 win.
