Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (1-1)

Point Spread: +4.5

The 49ers got demolished 33-14 in their Week 2 preseason game against the Denver Broncos. Despite getting some pretty decent numbers from quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and C.J. Beathard, who combined to go 15-of-23 for 196 yards, Hoyer and Matt Barkley coughed up two of the four fumbles the Niners lost.

Beathard successfully avoided turning the ball over, and continues to make a good case to be the Niners’ backup QB this season with his strong play in preseason. He’s now gone 14-of-23 with three touchdowns through the first two weeks.

The Niners running game was nonexistent against the Broncos as they couldn’t even muster two yards per carry in 19 rushing attempts. But after putting up 188 yards on the ground in Week 1 against the Chiefs, you’d think they should be able to bounce back from that poor performance.

And on defense, there’s a chance safety Jimmie Ward can be able to go for the first time in preseason after suffering a hamstring injury.

Betting on the Minnesota Vikings (1-1)

Point Spread: -4.5

Despite putting up just 13 points in a 20-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, the Vikings offense looked pretty good in defeat. Quarterbacks Sam Bradford, Case Keenum, and Taylor Heinicke combined to go 25-of-38 for 249 yards.

The much-maligned offensive line also did a solid job in pass protection, as they allowed just one sack with minimal loss. Meanwhile, rookie running back Dalvin Cook impressed with 40 rushing yards on seven carries.

The Vikings defense was badly burned by Russell Wilson, who went 13-of-18 for 206 yards and two touchdowns. They were also gashed on the ground, with the Seahawks racking up 153 rushing yards.

Minnesota’s rush defense has now given up an average of 140 yards in the first two weeks of preseason, something they will likely look to improve upon against the Niners.

Writer’s Prediction

Beathard shines once again as the 49ers (+4.5) spring the upset on the Vikings.
