Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (72-77)
The Orioles collected another loss Saturday night, 9-3. It was their fourth-straight loss to the Yankees, and their ninth defeat in 10 games (12th in their last 16).
We’re probably looking at another Orioles L on Sunday, as the struggling Ubaldo Jimenez is scheduled to be back on the mound. The 11-year veteran is 5-10 with an atrocious 6.79 ERA on the year, and he has allowed 12 runs on 13 hits and four walks in just 8.2 innings facing the Yanks this season. Further, the current Yankees’ roster is batting a .311 against him all-time (31-for-132).
On offense, Adam Jones is still the most accurate batter as of late (.316 in the past week and .310 against the Yankees all season). Trey Mancini, however, is also emerging, as he is now on a six-game hitting streak.
Betting on the New York Yankees (82-66)
Every trend is just in favor of the Yankees. Entering Sunday, they are winners of four-straight (and seven in their last eight), while also riding a five-game winning streak at home.
Last month’s key acquisition to bolster the pitching, Sonny Gray, is projected to start for the series finale. The 27-year-old is having a rocky start to his Yankee career, as he has only won three of his eight starts with the team despite having a quality 2.66 ERA.
Among the positive things, though, is he has 32 strikeouts in his last four appearances, and he won against Baltimore just 10 days ago, where he struck out five and only gave up one run on six hits and two walks across 5.2 innings.
The offense will have plenty of hot hands stepping up to the plate, with Gary Sanchez being one of the most dangerous. The second-year catcher is 10-for-24 (.417), with three homers, five RBIs, and seven runs in the last seven days.
Writer’s Prediction
The Yanks record the series sweep, 6-3.
