Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (0-3)

Point Spread: +7

San Francisco may have suffered yet another defeat last Thursday but there were still plenty of positives for the 49ers to take heading into their clash with Arizona this coming Sunday. Even though they lost 41-39 to the LA Rams in Week 3, the Niners will take comfort in the fact that it wasn’t a one-sided contest and that they gave their favored opponents fits the entire match.

Their offense finally woke up against the Rams after failing to score a touchdown in the first two weeks. The 49ers racked up five scores in that loss to LA with Brian Hoyer being the catalyst for that offensive resurgence. He completed 23-of-37 passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Hoyer, who finished with a 98.0 passer rating, also ran for a nine-yard touchdown. Unfortunately for Hoyer, San Francisco’s defense failed to back him up as they looked tired following a brutal loss to Seattle. They faced 79 plays in that defeat to the Seahawks and with the short turnaround, fatigue ultimately took its toll against the Rams.

The Niners hope they can bring the complete package when they face the Arizona Cardinals this coming weekend. All eyes will be on Hoyer if he can keep up his improvement with the deep ball. He was 7-of-9 for 227 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions against the Rams on throws traveling at least 15 yards in the air. He was 0-for-7 with an interception in that department in the Niners’ previous two outings. That will be crucial in unlocking an Arizona defense that’s allowing 216.3 passing yards per game this season.

Betting on the Arizona Cardinals (1-2)

Point Spread: -7

The Arizona Cardinals were sent crashing back to earth on Monday with a disappointing 28-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The Cards had an excellent chance to record their second consecutive win, but several missed opportunities on the offensive end denied them the coveted 2-1 slate. The Cardinals simply had no answer for Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott who accounted for 199 total yards and three touchdowns.

They will look to get their season back on track when they host the struggling 49ers this coming Sunday. The Cardinals will fancy their chances of doing just that as they have fared extremely well against the Niners of late. They have won each of their last four meetings with San Francisco by an average of 15.3 points.

For the Cards to extend that dominance, they will need to improve on their play on the defensive end. They can ill afford to allow the big plays that Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott feasted on last Monday. Even though the Cards allowed just 273 total yards on Monday, the Cowboys still managed to score four touchdowns in only 23:15 of possession.

The good news for Arizona is that its offense is starting to click once again. Carson Palmer and Larry Fitzgerald put on a show against the Cowboys, connecting on their first 11 attempts. Fitz caught a career-high 13 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown while Palmer finished 29 of 48 for 325 yards and two scores. Palmer and Fitzgerald will be licking their chops at the prospect of facing a Niners secondary that allowed 292 passing yards in Thursday’s loss to the Rams.
