Montgomery made a good account of himself in his last start, allowing just an earned run on five hits in 6.0 innings of a 6-3 home loss to St. Louis on July 21. Weaver earned a loss against the Cubs on July 22, when he gave up three earned runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings of a 7-2 defeat at Wrigley Field. Opponents are batting .194 against him this month.

St. Louis wins, 5-4.

Starters: Jose Quintana (9-6, 3.87 ERA) vs. Miles Mikolas (10-3, 2.82 ERA)

Pitching:

Quintana has pitched strong over his past few starts. In his last outing, he allowed two earned runs on six hits, albeit with four walks issued, in seven innings of a 7-2 win at home over the Cards on July 22. He is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in three starts this month. Mikolas has not allowed more than two earned runs in five of his last six starts. He did not get a decision in his last start in which he held the Cards to just two runs in 5.0 inning of mound duty in a 7-2 road loss to the Cubs on July 22.

  • Dexter Fowler is 7-for-16 with a homer vs. Quintana.
  • Javier Baez is 2-for-5 vs. Mikolas.

Hendricks hasn’t lasted more than 5.2 innings in six of his last seven starts, so expect the Cubs’ bullpen to show up earlier than normal this Sunday. In his last start, Hendricks allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings of a 5-1 home loss to Arizona on July 24. He has a 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA in his last three starts. Gant has not allowed a run in each of his last two starts, including in the Cards’ 6-3 road win over the Cards on July 21 wherein he tossed 5.0 scoreless innings and allowed just four hits.

  • Anthony Rizzo is 4-for-5 vs. Gant.

Writer’s Prediction:

St. Louis wins, 5-3.
