Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (1-2)

The 49ers pretty much know when exactly their playoffs chances died. That’s last Sunday, when starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered an ACL tear in his left knee during Week 3’s 38-27 road loss to Patrick Mahomes and the rolling Kansas City Chiefs. Garoppolo has been ruled out for the rest of the season, so that means C.J. Beathard will take over as the team’s starting signal-caller. Last year, Beathard played seven games, including five starts, for the Niners, compiling 1,430 passing yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions. He’s definitely not Joe Montana and he’s not going to carry this team into several wins. The 49ers will have to rely more on their backfield tandem of Matt Breida and Alfred Morris, who are already sharing ground duties to cover for the loss of Jerick McKinnon. The 49ers could find success on the ground against the Chargers’ defense that is giving up the 24th most rushing yards per game in the NFL.

The over is 5-1 in San Francisco’s last six

Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (1-2)

The Chargers are sorely missing defensive end Joey Bosa, who’s out with a foot injury. The Chargers are allowing 31.0 points per game this season, the second highest scoring defense average thus far, and just last Sunday, they were treated like a punching bag by the Los Angeles Rams in a 35-23 road loss. The good thing for the Chargers, at least for this week, is that the 49ers are going to parade a team without the quarterback and the running back they projected to be starters prior to the season.  The Chargers, even with a questionable defense, should be able to capitalize on having to face Beathard instead of a $130-million quarterback.

On offense, the Chargers can light it up. Quarterback Philip Rivers can still sling it, and against the Rams, he had 226 passing yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions on 18-of-30 completions. The Chargers are eighth in the league with 27.3 points per game.

The Chargers are 5-1 ATS in their last six games against San Francisco.

Writer’s Prediction

Los Angeles wins, 35-21.
