After two epic matches with Gennady Golovkin, the first one ending in a split draw and the second in a majority decision in favor of Alvarez, the Mexican flashed his power and won in a more decisive manner by knocking out Rocky Fielding in New York last December. That kind of punching power will be relied upon by Alvarez in trying to keep the longer Jacobs at bay. Jacobs can’t just force the issue, knowing Alvarez’s serious knockout power. Alvarez has 51 wins, 35 of which coming by way of knockouts. He also has a big advantage in terms of experience. Although Jacobs has faced someone like Golovkin before, Alvarez has had plenty of wars with quality to elite fighters like Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, Kermit Cintron, Alfredo Angulo, and Amir Khan. Look for Alvarez to dig deep into the body of Jacobs, while waiting for the perfect opportunity to unload in an attempt to finish the fight in the middle rounds. Alvarez will focus on cutting space inside the ring to negate some of Jacobs’ reach advantage. He also seems to have a sturdy chin, as he has yet to be knocked out in his career. The fact that he survived GGG’s bombs speak volumes about Alvarez’s ability to take a punch.

Jacobs earned a shot at Alvarez and a middleweight title belt when he defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenkov via a split decision in New York back in October. Prior to that, Jacobs had wins over Maciej Sulecki and Luis Arias. Before that, Jacobs engaged Golovkin in a 12-round that ended in a unanimous decision loss for the American. Still, that fight against Golovkin gave Jacobs confidence, considering that he was able to give a good account of himself following a fluky knockdown in the middle of the fight. As mentioned earlier, Jacobs is the rangier fighter between him and Alvarez. He has a three-inch reach edge over his more accomplished opponent, so he could be the aggressor in this fight, though, he’ll have to be careful, as he does not want to walk straight into an Alvarez power shot. He can opt to fight from a distance and use his jabs more, given his length. Jacobs has good power, too. In fact, he has a higher knockout percentage than Alvarez, albeit in fewer fights. Jacobs has 34 wins with 29 knockout victories. His last knockout came at the expense of former champion Sergio Mora during a middleweight title fight way back in 2016.
