Betting on the Michigan Wolverines (6-2 Overall / 3-2 Conference)
After the loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions on Oct. 19, the Wolverines needed to follow up with a big win. And boy did they get that by demolishing the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in Ann Arbor last Saturday, 45-14. The score tells most of what you need to know about that game: that the Wolverines had their way on offense and on defense. Shea Patterson threw for a couple of touchdowns, while Hassan Haskins and Zach Charbonnet rushed for 149 and 74 yards, respectively. Charbonnet rumbled his way to a pair of rushing touchdowns, too. The tandem of Haskins and Charbonnet could be bound for another productive Saturday this weekend, as they are set to face a Maryland defense that just gave up 321 rushing yards to their opponents last week. Limiting Notre Dame to just 180 total yards also sends a strong message to the Terps, who have scored no more than 14 points in two of their last three games.
The Wolverines are 4-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last five games overall.
Betting on the Maryland Terrapins (3-5 Overall / 1-4 Conference)
Maryland is still a one-win team in Big Ten play after going down in a 52-10 road loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Week 9. Maryland lost that game in part because of the team’s rushing attack getting shut down by the Golden Gophers. Maryland entered Week 9 of the 2019 NCAAF season averaging 207.1 rushing yards per contest but was held down to only 79 rushing yards. It’s not about to get easier for Javon Leake and company against Michigan’s stout defense against the run, so the Terps will have to try to open things up by establishing their passing game early. That’s not to say breaking the Wolverines’ pass defense is easier, but a degree of variation in their attacks could give the Terrapins some space to use their true strength on offense, which is to run. Leake paces the Terps with 543 rushing yards on the season. He and Anthony McFarland Jr. are tied for most rushing yards among Terps players this year with seven apiece.
The over is 3-0 in the Terrapins’ last three games.
Writer’s Prediction
Michigan wins, 53-7.
