Betting on the Alabama Crimson Tide (10-1 Overall / 7-1 Conference)
As expected, the Crimson Tide demolished the Western Carolina Catamounts at home, 66-3, last Saturday. Not only did Alabama crush the Catamounts — the Crimson Tide also covered their spread as 58-point home favorites. Quarterback Mac Jones passed for 275 yards and three touchdowns on 10-of-12 completions, while Tua Tagovailoa’s brother, Taulia, had 35 passing yards and a touchdown pass on 2-of-3 completions in a brief appearance. Alabama’s offense has taken a hit with the absence of Tua, but Jones is a good enough replacement who can stabilize and capitalize on the elite talent around him. On defense, Alabama was unforgiving to the Catamounts, as the team forced five turnovers and had four sacks. The win over the Catamounts can be treated as a mere warm-up for the showdown with Auburn, and if there’s anything we’ve learned from that game with regards to Alabama’s form, it’s that the Crimson Tide are still a force to reckon with, with or without Tua.
The Crimson Tide are 4-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last five games.
Betting on the Auburn Tigers (8-3 Overall / 4-3 Conference)
Just like Alabama, Auburn destroyed an FCS team over the weekend, as they eked out a 52-0 victory over the Samford Bulldogs at home. Bo Nix completed 15 of 23 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown, while backup quarterback Cord Sandberg had 84 passing yards and a couple of touchdowns. The Tigers were not threatened at any point in the game as made clear by the final score. Although the Tigers haven’t been as successful this season as they were in previous years, they have managed to make a good account of themselves in other games against elite opponents. They lost by only three points to the LSU Tigers last October and by just a touchdown on Nov. 16. Nix will have to put up a great performance for the Tigers to beat Alabama. He has 2,043 passing yards and 13 touchdowns against six interceptions on the season. Auburn’s defense has shown it can slow down top offenses, too. The Tigers are surrendering just 17.8 points per game which is 13th overall in the nation.
The Tigers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
The Crimson Tide win, 29-17.
