Marquette Golden Eagles vs Seton Hall Pirates Predictions, Picks, Odds, and NCAA Basketball Betting Preview – March 12 2020

The Big East Tournament soars into Thursday with the Marquette Golden Eagles hoping to avoid a plank walk at the hands of the Seton Hall Pirates. The odds of a Big East team taking the 2020 NCAA Basketball Championship are listed at +450. The sportsbook prices Seton Hall at +350 to win the Conference, while Marquette trails behind at +800 to do the same, which is in line with the fact that Seton Hall won both meetings with Marquette in 2020 by an average of more than 10-points. Will this Thursday play out any different?

Betting on the Marquette Golden Eagles (18-12 Overall / 8-10 Conference)

The Marquette Golden Eagles are coming off of a disheartening 88-86 loss to St. John’s on Saturday. You might not know it when looking at the numbers from their two top scorers, as guards Markus Howard and Sacar Anim poured in 30 and 24-points respectively. The rest of the team, did nothing. Literally.

That same lack of offensive support (for Howard) is what led to their 69-55 loss in January and the 88-79 loss on February 29th to Seton Hall. Markus Howard was a beast for 37-points in the most recent game against the Pirates, but it wasn’t enough to lift his team to victory. Howard is a one man show (averaging 27.8 ppg) and you need more than that to move forward in the Big East Tournament.

After a loss this season, Marquette is 5-6 against the spread (ATS) and is 4-5 ATS as the underdog.

Betting on the Seton Hall Pirates (21-9 Overall / 13-5 Conference)

Seton Hall is also coming off of a brutal Saturday loss, going down 77-60 against Creighton. But they can pick up the pieces with a third straight win against Marquette in 2020. In their last game on the last day of February against the Golden Eagles, the Pirates were golden from both within and beyond the arc, shooting for 53.3% from the field and 50% from 3-point range. You wouldn’t know it by the final score of 88-79 which favored Seton Hall, but Marquette dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Pirates 42-29. Of course, when you’re shooting over 50 percent there are far fewer offensive boards to grab. Head coach Kevin Willard can give with fewer rebounds when it comes with that kind of shooting performance. Seton Hall has Marquette’s number, and it’s hard to see a straight up (SU) win going any other way but in the Pirates side of the scoreboard, but will they cover the spread?

After a loss this season Seton Hall is 4-4 ATS but is 12-9 ATS as the favorite, covering 57.1% of the time.

Writer’s Prediction

Seton Hall wins, 81-72.
