Betting on the Marquette Golden Eagles (+14)
Record: 12-6 Overall/4-3 Conference
Marquette is red hot and appears to have gotten it together after a slow start to Big East play. The Golden Eagles suffered three losses in a row to start their conference schedule, but have since defeated all next four opponents, including the Seton Hall Pirates in a 73-72 win at home last Saturday. It’s also worth noting that two of Marquette’s wins during their current unbeaten streak were against sub-90 NET teams (Georgetown Bulldogs and DePaul Blue Demons). Nevertheless, the win against no. 20 Seton Hall solidifies Marquette’s status as a dangerous team, at least for the moment. Marquette, which went 11/22 from deep in the Seton Hall game, is averaging 75.2 points per game and led by Justin Lewis and Darryl Morsell. Lewis is putting up 15.3 points per game, while Morsell is making 13.8 per contest.
Marquette is 4-0 against the spread in its last four games overall.
Betting on the Villanova Wildcats (-14)
Record: 13-4 Overall/6-1 Conference
Villanova is scorching even hotter than the Golden Eagles. After losing to the Creighton Bluejays last December, the Wildcats have won six consecutive games. Last Sunday, Villanova continued their winning ways by clobbering the Butler Bulldogs at home. Collin Gillespie led the Wildcats with 17 points, while three other starters scored at least 14 points. Villanova went 12/19 from deep. Villanova’s a very disciplined team, which is a reflection of how terrific of a coach Jay Wright is. On the season, Villanova is eighth in the nation with just 9.3 turnovers per game and ninth in turnover rate (12.4%). That helps the Wildcats’ offense that is sixth nationally with 118.8 points per 100 possessions. Villanova is also excellent on the other side of the floor, with opponents scoring just 61.5 points per outing versus the Wildcats.
Villanova is 8-2 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Villanova wins, 79-67.
