Regular Season Record: 0-0
Whether you think the Texans have underperformed under Bill O’Brien or not, the fact remains that Houston has won the AFC South division in each of the last four seasons. Last year, the Texans finished the regular season 10-6 and reached the divisional round, where they got stopped by Kansas City. But the Texans also had their success against the Chiefs in 2019, as they defeated Patrick Mahomes and company, 31-24, on the road back in Week 6 of that season. The Texans relied on their rushing attack more than their passing in that game, as Carlos Hyde ran for 116 yards and a touchdown, while DeShaun Watson added two rushing scores. Hyde is gone but the Texans have upgraded their backfield with the arrival of David Johnson, who used to be one of the top running backs in the league. Also gone in Houston is wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, though, Watson still has solid weapons downfield in the likes of Will Fuller, Kenny Stills, and newcomer Randall Cobb. Defensively, the Texans will continue to rely on the pass-rushing combo of JJ Watt and Whitney Mercilus.
The under is 6-4 in the Texans’ last 10 games.
Betting on the Kansas City Chiefs (-9)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes. That fact alone means a lot to the Chiefs and sends chills down the spine of every opposing defensive coordinator in the NFL. Mahomes finished the 2019 season with 4,031 passing yards and 26 passing touchdowns against just five interceptions. The Chiefs have also retained most of Mahomes’ major weapons, including tight end Travis Kelce, wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins. They also got Mahomes a new running back to hand the ball to in rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who’s instantly given starting duties by head coach Andy Reid. When the Chiefs defeated Houston in last season’s divisional round, Mahomes threw for 321 passing yards and five touchdowns without an interception. Kelce was Mahomes’ top target in that game, as the tight end finished with 134 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Kansas City was second in 2019 with 29.9 points per game and first with 0.485 points per play. The Chiefs’ defense looks solid against the pass, with the pair of Tyrann Mathieu and Juan Thornhill, while Chris Jones is a man to watch up front after a nine-sack 2019 season.
The Chiefs are 9-1 against the spread in their last 10 games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chiefs win, 28-24.
