Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (+8)
Regular Season Record: 1-3
Although Tyrod Taylor has reportedly resumed practicing with the Chargers after getting sidelined with a punctured lung, he will have to wait for at least another week to start again for the team. For now, the Chargers will continue having rookie Justin Herbert under center. Herbert looked good for the most part of last week’s 38-31 road loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as he completed 20 of 25 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns, but had a back-breaking interception late in the game. Herbert will be missing one key weapon in the passing attack, as pass-catching running back Austin Ekeler went down with a hamstring injury in the Tampa Bay game. Ekeler will miss multiple weeks, so Josh Kelley and Justin Jackson will likely be splitting rushing duties for the Chargers, who are sixth in the NFL with 400.2 total yards per game. However, Herbert could capitalize on the Saints’ banged-up secondary that might miss Marshon Lattimore and Janoris Jenkins again. The two cornerbacks missed Week 4 due to injuries. The Chargers’ defense needs more activity upfront in Week 5 to contain Drew Brees after recording zero sacks against Brady and the Bucs.
The under is 3-1 in the Chargers’ last four games.
Betting on the New Orleans Saints (-8)
Regular Season Record: 2-2
The Saints prevented a three-game losing skid by scoring a come-from-behind 35-29 road win over the Detroit Lions in Week 4. Drew Brees passed for 246 yards and two touchdowns along with an interception on 19-of-25 completions, while Alvin Kamara rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. The Saints won that game despite missing star wide receiver Michael Thomas for the third game in a row. Thomas suffered an ankle injury in Week 1’s win against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but has reportedly joined the Saints in practice, albeit limited, on Thursday. Nevertheless, that’s a good sign for the Saints’ passing attack that is averaging 251.0 yards per contest — good for just 17th in the NFL. Against the Lions, Brees leaned on Emmanuel Sanders and Tre’Quan Smith, with the former coming up with the latter catching both of the quarterback’s touchdown tosses. After seeing fellow 40-year-old club member, Brady, pass for 369 yards and five touchdowns last week against the Chargers, Brees should be feeling good about his chances of dressing down LA’s defense.
The Saints are 5-5 against the spread in their last 10 games at home.
Writer’s Prediction
The Saints win, 27-23.
