Betting on the Syracuse Orange (+44.5)

Record: 1-4 Overall / 1-3 Conference

Syracuse just had its orange mercilessly peeled off by the Liberty Flames over the weekend during a 38-21 loss. It was a deflating setback, to say the least, for the Orange, who have now given up 38 points to each of their last two opponents, with both games resulting in losses. Even with such an embarrassing loss, there were a few positive takeaways from the Flames game for Syracuse, which is averaging 19.6 points and 264 total yards per game, entering the seventh week of the college football season. For one, quarterback Rex Culpepper is coming off his best game, so far. He passed for 211 yards and three touchdowns with an interception in that game. There’s no sugarcoating the dire hope of Culpepper to have a much better performance against the towering defense of Clemson, but at least, he has some momentum heading into that game. Also, the Orange have been excellent in forcing turnovers. In fact, they are fourth in the nation with 3.2 takeaways per game.

The over is 6-4 in Syracuse’s last 10 games overall, dating back to 2019.

Betting on the Clemson Tigers (-44.5)

Record: 5-0 Overall / 4-0 Conference

It’s performances like the one he had in last Saturday’s 73-7 annihilation of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets that further pushes up the NFL Draft stock of quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The potential top pick in the pros next year passed for 404 yards and five touchdowns with an interception on 24-of-42 completions. Overall, the Tigers had 500 passing yards and seven passing touchdowns in that game. Clemson can expect more of the same kind of outing from Lawrence next weekend against Syracuse, which, as mentioned, is good at forcing errors, but it’s not Culpepper or some average running back under center the Orange are going to face next. Along with Lawrence is running back Travis Etienne, who is spearheading Clemson’s ground attack that is averaging 187.8 rushing yards per game. Apart from the offense, Clemson has the defense to shut Georgia Tech down.  Clemson is allowing just 15.0 points per game and 290.2 total yards per contest. Its pass rush should be able to get past Syracuse’s offensive line with ease, as the Orange are worst in the ACC with 22.0 sacks allowed this season.

Clemson is 6-4 against the spread in its last 10 games at home.

Writer’s Prediction

Clemson wins, 48-13.
