Regular Season Record: 2-5
The Pats are not used to losing this many games, but it is what it is for Bill Belichick and his men, who are 0-4 in their last four starts. In their last game, the Patriots took a 24-21 road loss at the hand of the Buffalo Bills in Week 8. Cam Newton once again struggled in that contest, as he passed for just 174 yards with zero touchdowns on 15-of-25 completions. He also had a crucial fumble in the fourth quarter which could have helped the team at least push the game into overtime. But the Patriots can feel like the old Patriots again this coming Sunday against the dumpster on fire that is the winless Jets. Newton, who hasn’t scored a passing touchdown in the last three games is likely to end that streak in this contest, as the Jets are allowing 29.8 points and 3.4 touchdowns per game, 28th and 23rd in the NFL, respectively. New England’s defense will not be as taxed against the Jets’ attack that’s coughing up a meager average of 11.8 points per game, which – you guessed it – is the worst in the NFL.
The Patriots are 4-1 against the spread in their last five games against the Jets.
Betting on the New York Jets (+7)
Regular Season Record: 0-8
The Jets are a failure this season, but a 0-8 start to the season is still not enough for the team to sack Adam Gase. Guess they will have to suffer with him all the way through this season. But as bad as the Jets are this season, at least they will not be facing the dynastic version of New England in Week 9. Sharing the field with them on Monday is a Patriots team that is free-falling as well. As mentioned earlier, Newton has not passed for a touchdown in his last three starts, and that’s not all because the opposing defenses were great in those contests. Newton has also simply been not a good quarterback this season. Going from dealing with Patrick Mahomes who went off for five touchdowns and 416 passing yards in the Jets’ 35-9 road loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last week to taking on Newton, who’s obviously struggling, is a plus for the Jets, who’ve got a fairly decent run defense. The Jets are allowing 116.1 rushing yards per game, 13th in the NFL.
The under is 6-4 in the Jets’ last 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Patriots win, 27-17.
