Betting on the West Virginia Mountaineers (odds)
Record: 14-6 Overall / 7-4 Conference
The Mountaineers have bad intentions this weekend, as they are seeking revenge for their 72-70 home loss at the hands of the Longhorns last January. Since then, the Mountaineers have gone 5-2 straight up and 4-3 against the spread. The total has also hit in all but one of those West Virginia games during that stretch. The Mountaineers can get things done on both ends of the court, as they are 10th nationally with 117.4 points per 100 possessions and tops in the Big 12 in rim protection with a 5.4 block percentage. West Virginia gets to the free-throw line a lot, averaging 23.1 free throw attempts per game — 19th in the nation. They went 13 of 19 from the foul line in the loss to Texas, though. The opportunities will be there for the Mountaineers to get several free throw takes because Texas is fouling at a high rate of 25.1 percent per play – 317th in Division I basketball.
West Virginia is 3-1 in its last four games away from Morgantown.
Betting on the Texas Longhorns (odds)
Record: 13-5 Overall / 7-4 Conference
Texas seems to be over its recent bad stretch of three losses in as many games, as the Longhorns have come up with back-to-back wins over the Kansas State Wildcats and the TCU Horned Frogs. Sure, those games were against teams that are not considered anywhere near contender status nationally or even in the Big 12, but those wins certainly have helped the Longhorns get their confidence level up again. The Longhorns shot 50 percent from the field in the win over Kansas State and 49.1 percent against the Horned Frogs. Courtney Ramey and Andrew Jones teamed up in the January game against West Virginia, combining for 37 points on 13-of-25 shooting. Texas’ defense should remain a problem for West Virginia. The Longhorns are 24th in the nation with 92.3 points allowed per 100 possessions.
Texas is 3-1 against the spread in its last four games against West Virginia.
Writer’s Prediction
West Virginia wins, 73-70.
