Betting on the Wisconsin Badgers (odds)
Record: 21-5 Overall/12-4 Conference
Wisconsin is coming off a 77-63 home win over the Michigan Wolverines last Sunday, making it two victories in a row for the Badgers since losing to the Scarlet Knights at home on Feb. 12. Before taking care of business in the Michigan game, the Badgers defeated the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington on Feb. 15 to the tune of a 74-69 score. In this rematch against Rutgers, the Badgers will look to do better at the foul line. They went just 9/17 in the first meeting with the Badgers shooting close to 75 percent from the free-throw line on the season. They also turned the ball over 11 times, even though they are tops in the nation with just 8.5 turnovers per game. These are rectifiable problems Wisconsin definitely could address in the rematch. The Badgers were 15/16 from the charity stripe in the Michigan game and also gave the ball away just eight times.
Wisconsin, which takes on the Minnesota Golden Gophers Wednesday on the road, is 2-1 against the spread in its last three games against Rutgers.
Betting on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (odds)
Record: 16-10 Overall/10-6 Conference
Rutgers’ historic streak of wins against ranked teams came to an end last Sunday, as the Scarlet Knights fell prey to the Purdue Boilermakers on the road, 84-72. Still, what Rutgers did with its four-game stretch of nothing but wins against heavyweights clearly showed that the Scarlet Knights are no pushovers and capable of keeping in step with the best of them. Part of that stretch too was Rutgers’ 73-65 win in Madison over Wisconsin earlier this month. Ron Harper Jr. scored 21 points in that game, while the Scarlet Knights, as a whole, shot 51 percent from the field. Against Wiscosnon, Rutgers needs to be efficient with its shots, as the Badgers usually plays deliberately slow. But the Scarlet Knights can also get extra possessions with their ability to force turnovers. They are tops in the Big Ten with a defensive 10.8 steals percentage.
Rutgers, which plays the Wolverines in Ann Arbor this Wednesday, is 8-2 against the spread in its last 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Rutgers win, 66-64.
