Betting on the Kansas State Wildcats (odds)
Record: 14-16 Overall/6-12 Conference
There is not much momentum for the Wildcats to build on heading to the Big 12 tournament. They have not won a game in five games now after losing the regular season with a 78-71 home loss to the Oklahoma Sooners last Saturday. But Kansas State could finally get going this Wednesday against the team whom they scored its last win off. The Wildcats beat West Virginia at home on Feb. 14 to the tune of a 78-73 score. Kansas State shot just 37.3 percent from the field in that game but was 9/24 from deep and also drew plenty of fouls to go 31/39 from the foul line compared to just 20/24 for the Mountaineers. Markquis Nowell led the Wildcats in the win with 21 points, though his status for Wednesday’s game is up in the air, as of this writing. Nijel Pack and Mark Smith will look to carry the bulk of the load on scoring in any case. Pack leads Kansas State this season with 17.4 points per game while Smith is third (behind Nowell’s 12.6 PPG) with 12.5 per contest.
Kansas State, which leads the Big 12 with just 16.5 turnover rate, is 6-4 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Betting on the West Virginia Mountaineers (odds)
Record: 15-16 Overall/4-14 Conference
West Virginia managed to end a seven-game losing skid just before the Big 12 tournament, as the Mountaineers defeated the TCU Horned Frogs at home last Saturday, 70-64. Taz Sherman came through for Bob Huggins’ team, as he dropped 25 points against the Horned Frogs. Sherman undoubtedly has a big role for West Virginia in this upcoming game versus Kansas State. He scored 23 points in the February loss to the Wildcats and had 14 points in the January 71-68 win against the same team. Meanwhile, Sean McNeil scored 26 points in that win in Morgantown over the Wildcats. Sherman and McNeil will have to keep their offense going early versus Kansas State. Defensively, the Mountaineers have to slow down the Wildcats’ outside shooting. The Wildcats are 20/54 from deep so far this season opposite West Virginia. The Mountaineers are averaging 68.5 points per game.
West Virginia has covered the spread in three of its last four games. The Under is also 2-0 in the Mountaineers’ last two outings.
Writer’s Prediction
West Virginia wins, 70-68.
