Betting on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (odds)
Record: 27-9 Overall/12-6 Conference
The Red Raiders toppled the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the second round, 59-53, to gain entry into the Sweet Sixteen round. Transfer Kevin Obanor paced the team in scoring with 15 points, while Bryson Williams and Kevin McCullar each had 14 points. It wasn’t the most entertaining game in terms of speed and flow, but Texas Tech got the job done anyway, thanks in large part as well to its defense that was the main reason why Notre Dame shot just 32.7 percent from the floor. Defense is the name of Texas Tech’s game all season long and it’s showing in the tournament. Neither of the Red Raiders’ first two opponents in the tournament has posted a better effective field goal percentage than 46 percent. As talented as Duke’s scorers are, the Red Raiders seem to have the defense to slow the Blue Devils down. On the season, Texas Tech is allowing just 60.4 points per game.
The Under is 6-4 in Texas Tech’s last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Duke Blue Devils (odds)
Record: 30-6 Overall/16-4 Conference
Mike Krzyzewski’s farewell tour will last for at least another game after Duke took care of business in the second round, beating the Michigan State Spartans, 85-76. Paolo Bancher, who’s headed to the NBA as a lottery pick, put up 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Wendell Moore Jr., Mark Williams, and Jeremy Roach each had 15 points. The Blue Devils finished the game with 57.1 percent shooting from the field. The truth about Duke is that even against tough defensive teams, its players are talented enough to overpower any opposition. Sure, the Blue Devils will have to sweat Texas Tech, but putting 85 points on a lengthy Michigan State team that is also among the longest and tallest in the nation says a lot about the quality of Duke’s lineup.
Duke, which is fourth nationally with 120.3 points per 100 possessions, has seen the total hit the Over in eight of its last 10 games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Texas Tech wins, 72-70.
