Shohei Ohtani gets the call again to take the mound, and that is almost always good news for the Angels. Ohtani was successful in his last start, silencing the Boston Red Sox hitters with seven innings of 1-run pitching duty in a 5-2 home win on June 9. The Japanese superstar is carrying a 4-4 record with a 3.64 ERA. He is also leading all Angels starters with an 11.76 strikeouts per nine innings. For this assignment, Ohtani will be getting a Seattle offense that is just 2nd in the majors with a .236 batting average and 17th with a .702 OPS. As for their offense, Ohtani will also be among the central figures, as he is currently hitting .257/.333/.477. Mike Trout is undeniably the biggest threat for the Mariners’ pitching staff, as he is posting a 1.021 OPS this season with 16 home runs and a .292 batting average.
The Over is 3-0-1 in the Halos’ last 4 games against a team with a losing record.
Betting on the Seattle Mariners (odds)
Regular Season Record: 28-35
It’s been a rollercoaster ride of late for the Mariners, who scored a 5-0 win in the second game of their series against the Minnesota Twins last Tuesday before losing to the same team in the series closer, 5-0, on Thursday night. The Mariners have now gone 1-3 in their last four games and will be looking to regain their form at the plate and on the mound when they give the ball to 24-year-old George Kirby. The righty is 1-1 this season with a 3.65 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. He has surrendered 5 earned runs on 11 shots in 11.0 innings across his last two starts, but both resulted in Seattle victories, thanks to robust offense. On the season, Kirby is getting a healthy 5.84 runs per nine innings of mound duty. Seattle’s active players have a collective career batting average of .358 against Ohtani.
The Under is 8-1 in the Mariners’ last 9 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Angels win, 5-4.
