By now, everyone knows that the Browns will not have Deshaun Watson for at least the first six games of the 2022 NFL season. That leaves the Browns relying for now on the arm of backup Jacoby Brissett to handle the main quarterbacking duties for the Browns, who averaged 20.5 points per game in 2021. But Brissett shouldn’t be the only Browns quarterback getting snaps on Friday, with Josh Dobbs and Josh Rosen on the depth chart as well. There’s nothing special about this group without Watson but should have plenty of confidence in facing a Jaguars defense that got crushed by the Las Vegas Raiders in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton. The Browns’ ground attack could also erupt against the same Jacksonville stop unit that allowed 159 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns to the Raiders. Cleveland has arguably the best and deepest running back room in the NFL, so that’s a weapon the Browns can turn to in trying to become the second team to embarrass Jacksonville in the preseason.
The Browns are 6-4 against the spread in their last 10 preseason games.
Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (-2)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
Jacksonville stumbled right out of the gate this preseason phase of the NFL calendar, as they suffered a 27-11 loss to the Raiders in the aforementioned Hall of Fame Game. Kyle Sloter and Jake Luton split the time under center, with Sloter passing for 127 yards and a touchdown on 13/25 completions. Luton, on the other hand, went 10/17 for 94 passing yards. The Jaguars struggled on both ends of the field, going just 3/12 on third downs while allowing the Raiders to go 8/18 on third and fourth downs. If anything, the Jaguars at least have themselves warmed up, while the Browns are still waiting for their turn to get a taste of real, competitive football this 2022. Perhaps the Jaguars will let Trevor Lawrence see some action on the field in this matchup against the Browns. Even a few snaps could be enough for the Jaguars to make enough headway for the Jaguars to build on for the rest of the contest.
The Over is 3-0 in the Jaguars’ last three games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
The Jaguars win, 17-16.
