Betting on the Carolina Panthers (odds)
Regular Season Record: 1-0
The Panthers got the win Saturday to open up their 2022 preseason schedule nicely. With Baker Mayfield getting the start in that game for the Panthers, Carolina zoomed to a 23-21 win over the Washington Commanders on the road. Mayfield went 4/7 for 45 passing yards while Sam Darnold was 2/3 for 16 yards and a touchdown. Neither quarterback posted eye-popping numbers to separate from the other in this positional battle, but at least they both have momentum going into the next matchup against the Patriots’ defense that looked lethargic in Week 1. New England made New York Giants backup Tyrod Taylor look like a Pro Bowler, so you could imagine Carolina’s quarterbacks licking their chops as early as now. That includes PJ Walker, who was actually the highest-gainer quarterback for the Panthers in the win over Washington. Walker, battling for the QB3 role against rookie Matt Corral, had 136 passing yards on 10/19 completions versus the Commanders.
The Panthers are 3-1-1 against the spread in their last five preseason games.
Betting on the New England Patriots (odds)
Regular Season Record: 0-1
New England fell flat on its faces in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL preseason, as the Patriots lost to the New York Giants at home, 23-21. But one important thing to note here for the Patriots is that they should have fresher legs when they take on Carolina this Thursday. The Panthers will be playing on a short week, having played just last Saturday. The Pats, meanwhile, played last Thursday, giving them a few more full days of rest. And speaking of legs, watch out for the Patriots’ backfield to do damage on the ground in Week 2. They only rushed for 52 yards on 18 carries against New York but will be up against next the Panthers’ stop unit that allowed the Commanders burn rubber for 121 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 26 attempts. The Patriots also did not play most of its starters against the Giants, including quarterback Mac Jones, but the team might get them some playing time in Week 2.
The Patriots are 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 preseason games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Patriots win, 24-21.
