Bill Belichick is still the head coach of the Patriots, and sometimes, that’s all you need to know to feel confident in New England’s chances of being a competitive team. Last season, the Patriots made the NFL playoffs but exited early with a loss in the wild-card round. That said, that’s actually a pleasant surprise for the Pats when considering the fact that they only had a rookie quarterback starting for them. But with Mac Jones entering Year 2 of his NFL career, the Patriots are expecting to be better. In 2021, Jones passed for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. Meanwhile, the backfield tandem of Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson has a sleeper quality in it. Don’t be surprised if Patriots running backs have lots of success in Week 1.
New England, which averaged 1.3 rushing touchdowns (2nd in the NFL) in 2021, has seen the total hit the Over in all of its last four games.
Betting on the Miami Dolphins (-3)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The jury is still out on Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. But now, he will have one of the best offensive weapons in the entire NFL to help him unlock his true potential in the pros. We are talking about wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who was traded in the offseason by the Kansas City Chiefs to Miami. Hill is easily the top option downfield in Miami’s passing attack after recording 1,239 receiving yards and nine touchdown receptions in his last season with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Also don’t forget that Miami still has Jaylen Waddle and added Cedrick Wilson over the offseason. The ground attack is full of new faces with Miami adding running backs Raheem Mostert, Sony Michel and Chase Edmond. The weapons are there for the Dolphins to make waves right from the get-go.
The Dolphins are 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 home games against the Patriots.
Writer’s Prediction
The Patriots win, 24-17.
