Betting on the NC State Wolfpack (+7)
Record: 4-0 Overall / 0-0 Conference
The Wolfpack’s defense continues to dazzle. After a shaky start to their season in which they narrowly beat the East Carolina Pirates on the road in Week 1, 21-20, the Wolfpack responded and stitched together three dominant victories in a row, during which NC State has allowed just a total of 17 points. In their most recent game, the Wolfpac beat the UConn Huskies, 41-10 at home. Before that, NC State clobbered the Texas Tech Red Raiders at home, 27-14. That victory over the Red Raiders looked a whole lot better for NC State in retrospect, considering that Texas Tech just beat the Texas Longhorns over the weekend. The Wolfpack’s defense has been stout and dependable since that close win over East Carolina, but NC State’s offense can’t be slept on, with quarterback Devin Leary now having nine passing touchdowns against just two interceptions.
NC State is 5-2 against the spread vs. a team with a winning record.
Betting on the Clemson Tigers (-7)
Record: 4-0 Overall / 2-0 Conference
Like NC State, Clemson stayed undefeated after four weeks of football. The Tigers nearly took their first loss of the season last Saturday but they did just enough to pull off a 51-45 double-overtime win on the road against the no. 21 Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Clemson also has quarterback DJ Uiagalelei to thank for its escape from Winston-Salem with a win, as he went 26/41 for 371 passing yards and five touchdowns with zero inteceptions. It’s good for Clemson to get tested that hard by a ranked opponent, as that game against the Demon Deacons must have felt like getting doused by a bucket of cold water for the Tigers who have dominated their previous three opponents. Their pass defense still has to be better, though, after coming up without an interception against Wake Forest.
Clemson is 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 conference games.
Writer’s Prediction
Clemson wins, 27-22.
