Betting on the Pittsburgh Steelers (+2.5)
Regular Season Record: 5-8
There is a chance that Kenny Pickett will not be able to play against the Panthers. Pickett was not able to finish Pittsburgh’s game in Week 14 against the Baltimore Ravens – which they lost to the tune of a 16-14 score – because of concussion. Pickett was later placed in concussion protocol, which means he will have to clear it first before being allowed to play. If he can’t go, the Steelers will turn to Week 1 starter Mitchell Trubisky who was awful when he took over in the Ravens game following the departure of Pickett. But given the state of Carolina’s defense which isn’t exactly a formidable one, Trubisky could regain his better form. Pittsburgh’s defense, meanwhile, can put the clamps on the Panthers’ running back, with the Steelers allowing just 4.2 yards per carry – 10th-best in the NFL.
The Steelers are 4-1-1 against the spread versus a team with a losing record.
Betting on the Carolina Panthers (-2.5)
Regular Season Record: 5-8
The Panthers came out of a Week 13 bye and beat the Seattle Seahawks on the road, 30-24. It was the first time that Carolina won back-to-back games this season, so the Panthers will have a rare momentum off a winning streak when they step on the field in Week 15 against the Steelers. It’s a welcome boost for the Panthers, who will also be playing at home in this meeting with Pittsburgh. The Panthers are going to ride the legs of their running backs, particularly the pair of D’onta Foreman and Chubba Hubbard, who combined for 148 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in the win against the Seahawks. Overall, Carolina had 223 rushing yards on 45 carries. Their high dependence on their ground attack could tire out Pittsburgh’s defense which is only 27th in the NFL with 358.5 total yards allowed per game.
The Panthers are 4-0 against the spread in their last four games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
The Panthers win, 22-21.
