Betting on the Seattle Mariners
The Seattle Mariners returned to winning ways Saturday with a nerve-wracking 4-3 victory against the New York Yankees. Robinson Cano was the hero for the Mariners, blasting a pair of two-run homers against his former team. The Mariners will look to sustain the momentum from that huge win when they take on the Yankees again in their series finale today.
[sc:MLB240banner ]Starting for the Mariners this afternoon is ace Felix Hernandez (11-5, 2.84 ERA). The right-hander has been superb of late, giving up no runs in three of his last five starts. Hernandez was excellent in his last start, allowing just five hits over seven scoreless innings in a 7-2 home victory over the Los Angeles Angels on July 9. He received more than two runs of support in that game, the first time that has happened in his previous eight outings.
A victory today will make Hernandez the league’s first 12-game winner this season. He will fancy his chances of doing just that as he has fared extremely well against the Yankees on the road in the past. Hernandez has gone 5-1 with a 1.37 ERA in seven starts at the new Yankee Stadium.
Expected to lead the Mariners’ offense today is Robinson Cano. He is hitting .412 in his last 28 games at Yankee Stadium. He will have his work cut out for him, though, against Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia. He is just 2 for 9 in his career against the veteran left-hander.
The Mariners are 5-2 in their last seven road games.

Betting on the New York Yankees
New York had its two-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a gut-wrenching defeat to the Seattle Mariners. The Yankees had no answer for Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma who allowed just two runs on five hits in 5.2 innings of action. It was a disappointing loss for the Yankees who were denied a chance to move 10 games over .500 for the first time since 2013.
New York will look to avenge that defeat today when they take on Seattle in the final game of their three-game set. Starting for the Yankees today is C.C. Sabathia (4-8, 5.47 ERA). The Yankees have won four of their last seven games with Sabathia as their starter. The veteran has held opponents to four runs or fewer in six of his past seven starts. Sabathia has fared well against the Mariners of late, going 8-1 with a 1.87 ERA in his last 11 starts against them. He surrendered two runs over 5.2 innings in a 5-3, 11-inning victory at Safeco Field on June 2.
Sabathia was superb in his last start for the Yankees, allowing just two runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of action against the Athletics on July 8. It was an impressive performance from Sabathia who struggled in his four previous starts, posting a whopping 6.65 ERA during that stretch.
Given Sabathia’s recent struggles, the onus is on the New York hitters to pick up the scoring slack tonight. New York was 0 for 8 in runners in scoring position in its loss to Seattle yesterday. Expected to lead the Yankees’ offense today is Mark Teixeira. He is 20-for-66 (.303) lifetime against Hernandez with six homers and 13 RBIs. He went 2-for-4 in the Yankees’ 4-3 loss yesterday.
The Yankees are 6-3 in their last nine home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Seattle (-120) wins, 3-1.
