Betting on the Alcorn State Braves
The Alcorn State Braves have a tall order ahead in Week 5 as they try to bounce back from a miserable 43-18 loss to the Grambling State Tigers last Saturday.
The Braves struggled to put up points on the board that day despite racking up 377 yards on offense, mainly because they only converted two of their 15 third-down opportunities in the game. As such, another relatively efficient game from quarterback Noah Johnson (65 passing yards and a TD) was put to waste. Johnson has 482 passing yards and four touchdowns for the season without being picked off yet.
Even a dominant performance from linebacker Darien Anderson felt empty. Anderson had a team-high 12 tackles and a career-best four sacks that afternoon against the Tigers, but his team’s D as a whole still surrendered 534 yards for the game and 27 points in the second half alone. That simply cannot do against the Razorbacks this weekend, as Arkansas is averaging 32 points per contest thus far – 60th in the FBS.
Betting on the Arkansas Razorbacks
It seems as though the No. 20 Arkansas Razorbacks have abandoned their once-reliable running attack altogether, as they ran for just 120 yards on 40 carries (a dismal three yards-per-carry clip) in the 45-24 loss to the Texas A&M Aggies in Week 4.
Even without a solid ground game, though, the ‘Backs have had great success with Austin Allen under center. Allen went 28-for-42 on 371 yards passing and a pair of scores against the Aggies without an interception, and has now completed a shade under 67 percent of his passes for the season with nine touchdowns to just two picks.
The problem for Arkansas in the loss was that the team was sloppy against TAMU. They lost turned the ball over thrice on Saturday and lost the game in spite of having possession of the ball for about 40 minutes of the contest. Normally, it’s the ‘Backs that create those turnovers, as they’ve generated seven takeaways this season already, with at least one forced turnover in each game.
Perhaps the cure that Arkansas needs after that brutal loss to a conference rival is a date with a mediocre program outside of the SEC. The team is 2-0 this season against mid-major opponents, having outscored Louisiana Tech and Texas State a combined 63-23.
Writer’s Prediction
The Razorbacks make quick work of the Braves, 34-19.
