Betting on the Atlanta Falcons (+10.5)
Regular Season Record: 0-1
The Falcons had a win in the bag in Week 1 until they got outscored in the fourth quarter by the New Orleans Saints, 17-3. The ending was a 27-26 loss for Atlanta, which added yet another collapse to its growing list of meltdowns. Nevertheless, the Falcons must be satisfied with the performance of running back Cordarrelle Patterson, who went off for 120 rushing yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Quarterback Marcus Mariota also dealt damage on the ground with 72 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Mariota’s not a top-level quarterback, but he’s a dual-threat signal-caller who can keep defenses honest. Rookie wide receiver must have also gained confidence after leading the Falcons with 74 receiving yards on just five catches and seven targets. Don’t sleep too on Atlanta’s defense that had four sacks in Week 1. They could top that against Los Angeles’ offensive line that allowed Matthew Stafford to get sacked seven times last week.
The Falcons are 13-3 against the spread in their last 16 games in Week 2.
Betting on the Los Angeles Rams (-10.5)
Regular Season Record: 0-1
The Rams got embarrassed at home by the Buffalo Bills in a 31-10 loss to Josh Allen and company. Los Angeles didn’t look the part of a defending Super Bowl champions – well, except at least for wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who exploded for 128 receiving yards and a touchdown on 13 catches and 15 targets. It could have been a lot worse for Los Angeles if not for Kupp, but the Rams can’t also just keep on relying that heavily on him. Allen Robinson was a dud in Week 1, coming up with just a catch for 12 yards on two targets. The Rams’ rushing attack averaged just 2.9 yards per carry. Los Angeles is a much better team than what they seemed in Week 1, and a game against a lowly Falcons squad could just be what the Rams need to turn things around right away.
The Rams are 5-1 against the spread in their last six games after losing by at least 10 points at home.
Writer’s Prediction
The Rams win, 33-17.
