Betting on the Baltimore Ravens (-1)
Two straight wins to start the season are enough to say that the Ravens are on a roll. Baltimore overcame a 20-2 first quarter deficit to beat the Browns on the road, 25-20, on Sunday. Joe Flacco and company next travel to Jacksonville, looking to extend their win streak. The Ravens are 5-0 ATS in their last five games away from Baltimore.Once again, Mike Wallace proved his worth for the Ravens, catching two touchdown passes from Flacco to go with 41 receiving yards on four receptions. While a comeback win against the constantly doomed Browns isn’t the type of success Baltimore should be celebrating about, its upcoming matchup with Jacksonville’s shaky defense is another one that inspires confidence for the Ravens.
Hopefully for the Ravens’ backfield, Jacksonville’s poor defense will open up plenty of gaps for a Baltimore running game that generated just 80 rushing yards in the Browns game. Conversely, the Jags let the Chargers run all over them on Sunday with San Diego racking up 150 rushing yards.
Still, Baltimore remains a pass-heavy team with Flacco at the helm. Flacco had 302 passing yards on 25 of 42 completions but also threw two interceptions against Cleveland.
Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (+1)
The Jaguars received yet another black eye on Sunday, losing big to San Diego, 38-14.
For all the preseason hoopla about Jacksonville’s promising offense, the Jags weren’t able to establish their attack against San Diego. Blake Bortles had a forgettable Sunday afternoon, passing for 329 yards on 31 of 50 completions with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Overall, the Jags had three turnovers.
Gus Bradley’s seat is getting hotter now and he need the Jags to turn it up on both sides of the field next Sunday against the surging Ravens if he wants better job security. The Jags’ defense has to step up and contain Flacco. Among the few positives for Jacksonville in its loss to the Chargers was the solid play of their rookie Dante Fowler and Yannick Ngakoue.
Both rookie pass rushers held their own against San Diego’s offensive line, as they combined for three sacks. Duplicating that kind of aggressiveness is high on the list of what-to-dos on Sunday, as limiting Flacco’s production will go a long way in crippling Baltimore’s offense.
Writer’s Prediction
Jacksonville (+1) wins, 28-21.
