Betting on the Baltimore Ravens

When the Ravens started 3-0, there was a feeling that they might be due for a loss – Week 2 was a 25-20 come from behind win against the Browns, while Week 3 was a close 19-17 win over the Jaguars. It turns out that they actually were. They lost in Week 4… and Week 5… and Week 6… and possibly Week 7 if they don’t get it together.

The common thread in the three straight losses has been their poor play in the clutch, either by the offense or the defense:

  • Week 4 versus the Raiders – Ravens QB Flacco had four straight incompletions on their final possession.
  • Week 5 versus the Redskins – They went scoreless in the fourth quarter.
  • Week 6 versus the Giants – With the Giants facing 4th and 1, the Ravens blew the coverage and allowed a 66-yard game-winning TD with only 1:24 left.

Another glaring problem is the difference in their ability to contain offenses. From the impressive 254 total yards per game they were giving up in the three wins, it went up to 335 in the losses. The same goes to the passing TDs surrendered, as it doubled from four to eight in the two spans.

Baltimore must learn to limit their mistakes in the fourth quarter if they want their skid snapped. Against the Jets, who they themselves are struggling, the adjustments can be easier than expected.

The Ravens are 3-4 SU (5-2 ATS) in their last 10 games on the road.

Betting on the New York Jets

The Jets just lost big again, as they were slaughtered by the Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football, 28-3. It marks the third time this season that they were beaten by 18 points or more. The loss left the team with a 1-5 record, last in the AFC East and tied for second-worst in the NFL.

All of their struggles makes you wonder: Is Ryan Fitzpatrick really the bearded man who’s playing QB for the New York Jets? Are we sure it’s not Zach Galifiniakis or Nick Offerman? He’s really regressing big time. Where’s the dude that threw 31 TDs and led the Jets to a 10-6 record last year?

Fitz’s completion rate in his last four are at an atrocious 52-percent, with only two TDs and 11 INTs – good thing receiver Brandon Marshall is still averaging 72 yards per game on 16 yards per catch. The backfield, meanwhile, isn’t doing anything to make him look acceptable, or at least they’re failing in trying to do so, with back Matt Forte only recording 41 yards per game on 3.2 yards per carry.

Heading into the MNF game, the one praise the Jets could receive is their ground defense, as they were allowing the fewest rushing yards per game, with 68. It’s all out the window now after the Cards’ easily ran for 171 against them, 111 of which came from David Johnson, who also had three rushing scores.
