Two weeks into the new college basketball season and a couple of historic programs are on the rise after some lean years. Joining them in this week’s list are a former national champion, a plucky underdog from the Mountain West and a team with a lottery-bound prospect.

1. Arizona Wildcats
Next Game: 11/27 – Drexel
#5-ranked Arizona has gotten off to a fast start this year with five straight wins by an average of 20 points. And after failing to cover in their first game of the season, the Wildcats have responded by going 4-0 ATS in its last 4 games, three of which were spreads of over 20 points.
Junior guard Nick Johnson (16.8 points) and the much hyped freshman Aaron Gordon (13 points, 9 rebounds) will once again lead the Wildcats against the Drexel Dragons in the semifinals of the 2013 NIT Season Tip-Off tournament, their lone game for next week.
2. Connecticut Huskies
Next Game: 11/26 – Loyola
After missing last year’s tournament due to suspension, UConn is eager to return this year with a bang. Now in its new home in the Atlantic Athletic Conference, the #18 Huskies have won their first five games of the new season.
[sc:NCAAB240banner ]Senior Shabazz Napier (13.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 7.8 assists) is a triple-double waiting to happen, and he could add to the one he has already in next week’s clash with Loyola (MD).
3. San Jose State Spartans
Next Game: 11/23 – CS Fullerton, 11/27 – Portland
San Jose State has not had a particularly great beginning to the new season; the Spartans came out of the gates losing their first four games.
On the bright side, they have been competitive in every game so far, which has helped them in carving out a 4-1 ATS record, all as the underdog. They should be able to continue their trend as dogs in their games next week against Cal State Fullerton and Portland.
4. Xavier Musketeers
Next Game: 11/25 – Abilene Christian, 11/28 – Iowa
Xavier had a disappointing 17-14 season, their last in the Atlantic 10 before moving to the Big East this year. The Musketeers have an undefeated 4-0 SU start so far, and 3-0 ATS.
Potential NBA lottery pick Semaj Christon (16.3 points, 4.8 assists) will run the show for the Musketeers, who have games against winless Abilene Christian and Iowa next week.
5. Loyola Marymount Lions
Next Game: 11/22 – Northern Iowa
Loyola Marymount went 11-23 last season and a disastrous 1-15 in conference play. However, they’ve been stockpiling wins in non-conference play so far, with a 4-0 SU mark, and three straight ATS wins.
The famous 1990 NCAA Tournament Champions won’t likely make another run in March Madness any time soon, but next week’s contest vs Northern Iowa is likely to extend their unbeaten run.
