The Top Five College Football Games to Watch in Week 6

#3 Clemson (-17) vs. Boston College (+17) – Oct. 7, 7:30 PM ET
Clemson was in an all-out brawl during its highly-anticipated ACC showdown with Lamar Jackson and the Cardinals last Saturday night. But Deshaun Watson, who is currently priced at +600 to win the Heisman Trophy, did not disappoint his team, leading them to a dramatic 42-36 victory to remain undefeated (5-0) this season. Watson delivered a season-high of five touchdowns at the end of that game.
As much as how spectacular Watson has played this season, you can’t overlook his turnovers. He’s mounted a total of seven interceptions already, three of which happened in the win over Louisville. Let’s see if the junior QB can start limiting his errors when the third-ranked Tigers prepare for another conference matchup against Boston College, a team that’s fresh off two resounding victories versus Wagner and Buffalo.
Writer’s Prediction: Clemson (-17) stays perfect, beating the Eagles by 20 or more points.
#9 Tennessee (+7) vs. #8 Texas A&M (-7) – Oct. 8, 3:30 PM ET
Only one of these Southeastern Conference powerhouses can keep their unbeaten records alive this weekend. Who’s it going to be?
The ninth-ranked Vols survived a major scare in its last game versus Georgia to improve to 5-0 this season. Quarterback Joshua Dobbs (+2,000) has been doing just enough to lead the offense, utilizing both his arms and legs and veteran experience in almost every way possible. The talented senior has amassed 13 touchdowns this season, more than half of which came in the last two games.
Meanwhile, the Aggies also have the benefit of being helmed by a very skilled quarterback in the form of Trevor Knight. He has done a solid job in spreading the love to his receiving corps and running backs. This team is averaging almost 500 yards of total offense and more than 30 points per game.
The decider of this game, however, will be defense. Both teams have defenses loaded with playmakers that can shut down almost any offensive unit. Tennessee and Texas are allowing just 42.2 points combined this year.
Writer’s Prediction: Texas A&M (-7) wins and barely covers the spread.
BYU (+6) vs. Michigan State (-6) – Oct. 8, 3:30 PM ET
BYU snapped its three-game skid after squeaking past Toledo, 55-53, thanks to a game-winning, 19-yard field goal from Rhett Almond. The Cougars’ running game found a lot of success during that win, as Jamaal Williams put up a huge game with 286 yards on 30 carries and five TDs. But they might have to rely more on their passing game against a Michigan State team that’s allowing just 3.1 yards per carry on the season.
Speaking of the Spartans, have to be disappointed with themselves. Last week’s 24-21 loss to Indiana basically ended their hopes of returning to the postseason. But come this weekend, they better bring their A-game against the visiting Cougars, who are looking to hand them their first three-game slide since 2009. A win for Michigan State is a must not only because of that, but also for the purpose of igniting a fire within them.
Writer’s Prediction: Spartans (-6) win it, 35-27.
#25 Virginia Tech (+2.5) vs. #17 North Carolina (-2.5) – Oct. 8, 3:30 PM ET
Last season’s meeting between these two ACC rivals needed an extra period to decide the victor. It was the Tar Heel who won that game and also spoiled the now-retired Frank Beamer’s final home game in Blacksburg.
For sure, the 25th-ranked Hokies are still aware of that, and would love to get their revenge this Saturday. They had the previous weekend off, but they are probably still relishing their 54-17 win over East Carolina. QB Jerod Evans finished that game with 282 passing yards and three touchdowns. He also racked up 97 yards on ground in the victory.
North Carolina, on the other hand, is fresh off a dramatic win on the road at FSU, 37-35. Quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who’s presently priced at +5,000 to win the Heisman Trophy, continued to play mistake-free football, throwing for 405 yards together with three touchdowns. He’s also ended up with at least three or more TDs in his last three games. The Tar Heels defense, which gave up 595 yards to the Seminoles, has got to improve, though.
Writer’s Prediction: UNC (-2.5) wins and covers.
#1 Alabama (-14) vs. #16 Arkansas (+14) – 7:00 PM ET
This is going to fun to watch. Alabama looked sloppy in its win over Kentucky last week, but rest assured, Nick Saban will have his group ready to dominate Arkansas. The Crimson Tide is one of, if not the most balanced college football team in the nation today, averaging nearly 500 yards and allowing just 256.4 yards per contest.
Nevertheless, the Razorbacks should put up some resistance thanks to an intimidating offensive line that’s provided enough protection to their quarterback in Austin Allen. He’s been very efficient for Arkansas, posting at least two or more touchdowns in each game this season. Allen also has yet to turn the ball over since being intercepted twice in the season-opener against Louisiana Tech.
Writer’s Prediction: Alabama (-14) stays hot, 40-24.
