The NFL preseason moves past its halfway mark as teams gear up for Week 3 of its glorified practices. That includes tonight’s matchup between the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium. There won’t be any lollygagging tonight in the MLB, however, as the San Francisco Giants continue their chase for a spot in the postseason when they host the St. Louis Cardinals.

[sc:MLB240banner ]The search for his first win in Giants uniform continues for Mike Leake (9-6, 3.44 ERA), who pitched well, albeit in a loss in his most recent outing. Leake allowed just a run on one hit in six innings of work in San Francisco’s 3-2 loss to the Pirates on Saturday. He’ll make his home debut for San Francisco later tonight, as he hopes to notch win No. 1 as a Giant.
As for the Cards, they will counter with Michael Wacha, who will look to improve his 15-4 record and 2.80 ERA. Before the Reds traded Leake to San Francisco, they went 5-1 in the righty’s last six home games. The Cards, meanwhile, are 4-0 in Wacha’s last four road starts.

San Francisco (+110) wins, 3-2.
New England Patriots vs. Carolina Panthers (8:00 PM ET)
Line: New England Patriots vs. Carolina Panthers; total: 44.0– view all NFL lines
Just like in the Patriots’ first two preseason games, expect Tom Brady to cede most of the minutes under center to Jimmy Garoppolo, who played well in the team’s 26-24 win over New Orleans last week. In that game, Garoppolo completed 28 of 33 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown with one interception. The Pats’ rushing game was on point, too, with James White and Dion Lewis combining for two rushing scores.
The Panthers, however, showed solid defense against the run in their close 31-30 win over Miami last week, as they allowed the Dolphins to rush for only 88 yards. Carolina will be led by quarterback Joe Webb, who passed for 171 yards and one touchdown in the Miami game.
Writer’s Prediction
Carolina wins, 35-28.
