NHL News and Predictions

Edmonton Oilers vs. Florida Panthers (7:30 PM ET)

Line: Edmonton Oilers (+125) vs. Florida Panthers (-145); total: 5.5view all NHL lines

The Oilers kicked off a challenging six-game road trip by slaying a giant in Windy City with a 3-1 victory over the Blackhawks last Saturday. After a date with the Bolts with the Lightning Tuesday, the Oilers will try to put a stop to Florida’s five-game win streak. The Panthers return home tonight following a 5-0 road trip, punctuated by a 2-1 triumph over St. Louis.

The last meeting between the two teams was a thriller with the Oilers winning in overtime, 4-3, on Jan. 18.  Consider this hot trend for the Oilers: they have won all of their last seven games in Florida dating back to 2002. As for the Panthers, they are 4-1 in their past five at home.

Writer’s Prediction: Florida (-145) extends its win streak to six games with a 3-2 win.

Washington Capitals vs. Philadelphia Flyers (8:00 PM ET)

Line: Washington Capitals (-170) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (+150); total: 5.5 – view all NHL lines

Any cracks on defense are likely to get highlighted when up against Washington, which has a high-octane attack that produces the second most goals for per game average in the league. The Flyers should know that. They lost to the Caps 5-0 on Jan. 15. That said, the Caps have shown signs of cooling off after winning six straight, as they have suffered back-to-back losses against the Red Wings (!) and the Rangers, respectively.

That could just be the Caps taking their foot off the gas pedal so expect them to play with more focus against a struggling Philadelphia squad. The Flyers lost five of its last seven outings and is 25th in the league with3.0 goals allowed per contest.  Philly won the first encounter with Washington this season with a 3-2 victory via shootout on Dec. 21.

Writer’s Prediction: Washington (-170) pummels the Flyers, 4-1.

Boston Bruins vs. Anaheim Ducks (10:30 PM ET)

Line: Boston Bruins (-120) vs. Anaheim Ducks (EVEN); total: 5.0 view all NHL lines

The coaching change from Claude Julien to Bruce Cassidy is obviously doing wonders for the Bruins, who have earned a W in each of their last four games. Winning the Atlantic division suddenly is within reach of Boston that’ll try to prolong its win streak and avenge a 4-3 loss on Dec. 15 to Anaheim later tonight.  The Ducks, on the other hand, are eager to bounce back from an upset loss to the Coyotes on Monday.

Writer’s Prediction: Boston (-120) wins, 2-1.
