Betting on the Boston Red Sox (27-22)

Moneyline: -185

The Boston Red Sox’s season-high six-game win streak is over. After shutting out the Seattle Mariners for back-to-back games, the Sox were shut out in a 5-0 loss last night. Reigning AL Cy Young Rick Porcello was rocked for 11 hits and the Sox as a team gave up 16.

The Red Sox will be hoping for a somewhat better outing from the other former Cy Young winner set to start tonight: David Price. Price will make his season debut after suffering an elbow strain back in March. He didn’t look very good in his two rehab starts, as he gave up nine runs (six earned) in just 5.2 innings.

Price, who will be on a 90-pitch limit, doesn’t have the greatest record against the White Sox. He’s 5-5 with a 3.30 ERA in 13 starts.

However, if Price does falter, the Sox still have a red-hot lineup that averaged nearly eight runs per game during their six-game win streak and will face inexperienced starter David Holmberg.

Infielders Mitch Moreland and Xander Bogaerts have been wielding hot bats recently. Moreland is batting .429 with a homer and seven RBI, while Bogaerts’ hitting .417 and has hit safely in his last seven games.

Betting on the Chicago White Sox (23-26)

Moneyline: +165

The up-and-down White Sox were back up during their weekend series against the Detroit Tigers. They won three of four games at home to improve to 23-26, a half-game ahead of the Tigers for third in the AL Central.

To see just how streaky the Sox have been, here’s a recap of how their previous six series have gone: swept in three vs. Diamondbacks; won three of four vs. Mariners; swept in three vs. Angels; won two out of three vs. Padres; swept by O’s and Twins.

And now, they’ll have try and survive a start from reliever David Holmberg. The lefty has been very solid in eight relief appearances this season, logging a 0.87 ERA in 10.1 innings. He also has some experience starting at the majors, but they weren’t very fond ones. He went 3-6 with a 6.99 ERA in his 12 career major league starts.

The Sox will need Jose Abreu’s big bat in this game. The slugging first baseman is 13-of-31 in his last seven games, with two homers and five RBI. However, he’s struggled mightily against Price in his career, going just 2-of-16. One of those hits was a home run, though.

Writer’s Prediction

The Red Sox (-185) chase Holmberg out of the game as they get the win in Price’s debut.
