Betting on the Boston Red Sox (31-25)

Moneyline: +116

The Red Sox are back on a roll. After losing the first two games of their series against the Baltimore Orioles, they stormed back to win the next two to salvage a split. Now it’s off to New York to face a Yankees team that took two games in Boston back in April.

Drew Pomeranz should be primed to take on the Bombers after putting together back-to-back quality starts. He gave up two earned runs and struck out 11 in six innings at home against the Texas Rangers, and followed that up with his best outing of the year against the Chicago White Sox. The lefty went seven strong innings, giving up a single run on seven hits.

Pomeranz had a similar outing against the Yankees for the San Diego Padres last season as he went seven strong innings with just one earned run at Petco. He had a 3.38 ERA overall against New York in three starts.

The Red Sox haven’t had the best record at new Yankee Stadium, though. They’re just 3-7 in their last 10 visits, and lost their last four in a row dating back to last year.

Betting on the New York Yankees (32-22)

Moneyline: -126

The Yankees kept true to form after alternating wins and losses in their recent four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Bronx Bombers have won back-to-back games just twice since being 21-9 on May 9, and are just 11-13 during that span.

But after dropping the series finale on Sunday, the Yankees are now in danger of dropping back-to-back games for the first time in a couple of weeks with Masahiro Tanaka on the mound. The Japanese righty has lost four decisions in a row after winning five in a row earlier in the year.

Three of those four starts weren’t pretty, either. He gave up six or more earned runs in three of those, and didn’t even last over three innings in two of them. Tanaka is coming off another terrible performance against the Orioles, as he gave up seven earned runs on nine hits in just 5.2 innings.

However, Tanaka has had some pretty good success against the Red Sox. He’s given up a total of just two earned runs in his last three starts (24 innings) against Boston, which includes a three-hit shutout at Fenway Park back in April.

Writer’s Prediction

Tanaka turns things around enough to help the Yankees (-126) to a series-opening win over the BoSox.
