The Boston Red Sox (17-11) open up another three-game set with one of their AL East rivals—the New York Yankees (9-17)—tonight. This time though, the Red Sox, who swept the Yankees, 3-0, in their first regular-season series last week, will be the ones playing as the road team and you can bet that a jam-packed Yankee Stadium crowd won’t make it easy for them. Can Boston get the best out of the Yankees again? Or will the Pinstripes redeem themselves?

Read on below for quick look at each meeting of this promising three-game series. And if you’re craving for some NBA Playoff action as well, check out our preview of Game 3 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Atlanta Hawks.

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees Regular-Season Series Preview

Game 1 (Friday, May 6, 7:05 PM ET) – Rick Porcello (5-0) vs. Michael Pineda (1-3)

MLB 250x Banner

Boston heads into this game having won five of its last six games and as winners of back-to-back games. That winning stretch is bound to extend further especially with Rick Porcello set to take the mound. He’ll be facing the Yankees again for the second-straight time. In his last start, the sinker-ball pitcher registered six strikeouts across seven shutout innings. Also, Porcello has not allowed a run in his last 13 1/3 innings.

As for the hosts, they’ll be putting their trust on Michael Pineda, who is 1-3 with a 6.33 ERA thus far this season. He’s failed to pitch beyond five innings in his last two starts. In that brief stretch, he’s surrendered a total of 15 hits and nine earned runs. New York also lost both those games.

Writer’s Prediction: Boston wins the opener in resounding fashion, 6-1.

Game 2 (Saturday, May 7, 1:05 PM ET) – David Price (4-0) vs. Nathan Eovaldi (1-2)

Nathan Eovaldi about to throw a pitch

Things are looking relatively good for the Red Sox in the second game as well. This time, they’ll be giving the nod to David Price, who is 4-0 despite having an ERA of 6.14. Price’s most recent start was also against the Yankees on May 1. In that start, he gave up eight hits and six earned runs but still picked up his fourth win. Don’t expect an ace like Price to get rocked for the second-consecutive time. He is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP and .212 opponents’ batting average in two road starts this season.

Meanwhile, it’s Nathan Eovaldi toeing the rubber for the Yankees. He’ll be entering this game coming off his worst performance of the season against the Red Sox last weekend. He was knocked around for six runs on 10 hits in just five innings of work. Prior to that game though, Eovaldi flirted with a no-hitter and fired seven shutout frames to help New York defeat the Rangers, 3-1.

Writer’s Prediction: New York gets this one, 5-3.

Game 3 (Sunday, May 8, 8:05 PM ET) – Steven Wright (2-3) vs. Luis Severino (0-4)

Boston’s starter Steven Wright should be able to provide a brilliant performance on the mound here. He’s only 2-3 this season, but he’s been pitching magnificently with an ERA of 1.67 and a .188 opponents’ batting average throughout five starts. More importantly, Wright’s really thrived against the Yankees, owning a 2-1 win-loss record along with a 1.50 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across three career games (two starts).

On the other side, Luis Severino will be getting the start for the Pinstripes. He’s been having a horrible start to the season thus far, going 0-4 with a high ERA of 6.31. Severino has started just once against the Red Sox, but he was pretty impressive in that one. The 22-year-old righty logged in five inning of two-run ball and delivered seven K’s. It’ll be interesting to see if Severino can replicate that performance.

Writer’s Prediction: Boston gets the last laugh with a thrilling 7-5 victory.
