Betting on the BYU Cougars (+7)
BYU extended its winning streak to three games with a nail-biting 28-21 victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Friday night. It was another convincing performance by the Cougars who recorded their second straight series victory over the Bulldogs. Leading the way for BYU in this victory was quarterback Taysom Hill. He accounted for four total touchdowns in the win against Mississippi State. Hill has passed for 1,420 yards and nine scores while adding 324 yards and four touchdowns on the ground this season.
Things are bound to get tougher, though, for Hill and the rest of the Cougars as standing in their way in their next match are the streaking Boise State Broncos. Hill will need to find ways to dissect a Boise State defense that’s allowing just 371.0 total yards per game this season, 48th in the FBS. Fortunately for Hill, he has the ever-reliable Jamaal Williams at his side for Thursday night’s clash. He ran for 76 yards in the win against Mississippi State and in the process set the school career rushing record at 3,468.
Defensively, the Cougars will need to put the clamps on Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien. He leads the Mountain West with 1,622 yards and 12 touchdown passes this season. Regardless of that fact, the Cougars will still fancy their chances against the Broncos as they have fared extremely well against them of late. BYU stunned Boise State, 35-24, in their lone meeting last season. Mitchell Juergens caught a touchdown pass from Tanner Mangum on fourth down with 45 seconds left to give the Cougars the dramatic victory.
The Cougars are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the vs. Boise State Broncos (-7)
The Boise State Broncos will head to their showdown with BYU with momentum on their side after beating the Colorado State Rams, 28-23, on Saturday night. It was another impressive victory for the Broncos, who improved their season-record to 6-0. They have won their first six games by an average of 16 points.
Key to Boise State’s blistering start has been their incredible offense. The Broncos are 34th in the FBS in total offense, averaging a whopping 466.7 yards per game this season. Starring for the Broncos in their latest victory was Jeremy McNichols. He rushed for a career-high 217 yards and two touchdowns in the win against Colorado State. McNichols has now rushed for 775 rushing yards this season and has caught 20 passes for 263 yards.
For the Broncos to preserve their unbeaten record against the Cougars, they will need to quickly establish their passing game this coming Thursday. Boise State outgained Colorado State, 218-189, in passing yards on Saturday. Expected to play an important role this weekend is wide receiver Thomas Sperbeck. He has 38 receptions (six touchdowns) while recording a Mountain West-leading 701 receiving yards this season. Sperbeck caught five passes for 72 yards and a score in the win against the Rams. He will be licking his chops at the prospect of facing a BYU secondary that’s allowing 270.7 yards per game through the air this season, 100th in the FBS.
Boise State is 8-2 SU and 2-8 ATS in its last 10 home games. The Broncos are pegged at +15,000 to win the national championship this season.
