Betting on the Charlotte 49ers (2-1 Overall / 0-0 Conference)
After falling prey to the Appalachian State Mountaineers in Week 2, the 49ers bounced back and destroyed the UMass Minutemen at home, 52-17. Quarterback Chris Reynolds went 10 for 12 for 155 passing yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions. Reynold got plenty of help from the backfield. Running back Benny LeMay rushed for 113 yards on 16 carries, while Aaron McAllister and Ishod Finger combined for three rushing touchdowns. Overall, the 49ers had 338 rushing yards on 40 carries. They are going to lean on what they do best, which is pounding the ball to their backfield, but they will need to have some variety to keep Clemson from having a full read of their offense. Defensively, the 49ers will try to rattle Trevor Lawrence in the pocket after recording five sacks against the Minutemen.
The 49ers are 3-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last four games.
Betting on the Clemson Tigers (2-0 Overall / 0-0 Conference)
The deeper the season gets, the better Clemson’s defense appears. The Tigers are coming off a 41-6 road win over the Syracuse Orange last Saturday, which came after allowing just 14 points to the Georiga Tech Yellow Jackets and 10 to the Texas A&M Aggies. Against the Orange, Trevor Lawrence got intercepted twice but threw for 395 yards and three touchdowns on 22 of 39 completions. The picks are piling up for Lawrence this season, as he has a total of five interceptions against five passing touchdowns. That being said, he’s unlikely to have much trouble tearing down Charlotte’s pass defense that is not used to dealing with an elite and loaded aerial attack that Clemson has. On defense, the Tigers have all the tools to cripple the game plan of Charlotte. The Tigers recorded eight sacks against Syracuse, which owns a sturdier offensive line than Charlotte.
The over is 3-2 in the Tigers’ last five home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Clemson wins, 49-10.
