Betting on the Chicago Cubs (39-38)

Moneyline: +150

The inconsistent Cubbies followed a familiar script in their 6-1 loss to the Washington Nationals last night. Jake Arrieta’s road struggles continued as the defending champs once again failed to go three games over .500 for the first time since June 6. The Cubs have now alternated wins and losses over their last eight games.

The Cubs haven’t lost back-to-back games since June 10, though, and they should have a decent chance of keeping that streak going with John Lackey on the mound. The veteran right-hander has put up back-to-back outings of six innings and just one earned run.

Lackey also has a very good record against the Nationals. His team has won all four starts against Washington since 2015, and has given up just five earned runs in his last 19 innings of work.

Betting on the Washington Nationals (46-31)

Moneyline: -170

The Nats went out and snapped a two-game skid last night on the back of Trea Turner’s amazing night. The leadoff man went 2-of-4 with two runs scored and four stolen bases to lift a Nats offense that needed a bit of a jump-start.

Washington will look to provide similar run support for starter Stephen Strasburg. The Nats righty has received an average of 7.4 runs in his five starts this month, and that includes a 2-1 loss he took despite giving up just one earned run in six innings.

Strasburg will need all the runs he can get because he hasn’t been at his best this month. He’s given up five or more earned runs in five innings in two of his last three starts, and has an ugly 5.08 ERA overall in June.

Strasburg does have a promising record against the Cubs, though. The Nats are 3-1 in his four career starts. His last home start against Chicago came last year, as he gave up just one earned run and struck out eight in seven strong innings.

Writer’s Prediction

Strasburg leads the Nats (-170) to another home win.
