Pitching Edge – Chicago White Sox (-150)

With all due respect to Seattle’s Wade LeBlanc (1-0, 3.52 ERA), he’s nowhere within White Sox ace Chris Sale’s rarified air of awesomeness. Sale, who just came off his fifth-straight All-Star appearance, currently has an MLB-best 14-win record. He’s also fourth in the AL when it comes to both strikeouts (123) and WHIP (1.04).

Sale’s lifetime numbers against Seattle have even been just as spectacular as that of his current campaign. He holds a 4-0 record with an ERA of 2.66 and 54 K’s in 40.2 innings of work against the M’s. The American League’s reigning strikeout leader is arguably the main reason why the White Sox are still performing rather competitively and why they’re decently priced at +1,000 to win the AL Central this season.

Batting Edge – Seattle Mariners (+135)

While Seattle’s pitching from top to bottom has been quite a disaster, the team has stayed in the thick of the Wild Card hunt by way of their solid offense. The Mariners are merely right at the .500 mark with a 46-46 record as we speak, and yet they own a run differential of plus-41. In comparison, the White Sox own a minus-27 run differential, albeit that they’re currently one game under .500.

It’s a good thing 36-year-old rightfielder Nelson Cruz hasn’t lost any of his oomph yet because he’s actually one of Chicago’s most feared players from across the plate. Cruz has a sweet .438 batting average to go with a couple of dingers and four RBIs in just 18 at-bats versus the White Sox. The four-time All-Star must bring his fantastic form once more, as Chicago has a 43-20 record over the M’s in their last 63 head-to-head meetings, including going 18-13 away from the Windy City.

Writer’s Prediction: The White Sox (-150) take the first contest of their three-game series against the Mariners, 3-2.
