Betting on the Chicago White Sox (45-73)
Pitching for the White Sox in this clash is James Shields (2-4, 5.90 ERA). He was solid in his last start, striking out a season-high eight batters in a tight 5-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals. The right-hander has yet to face the Texas Rangers this year, but Shields is 3-3 with a 3.64 ERA in eight career starts at Globe Life Park. The White Sox will look to get a better version of Shields tonight as they have lost six of their last seven games with the 35-year-old veteran as their starter.
Given Shields’ erratic form, the White Sox’s offense will need to stand tall against the Rangers tonight. One guy who’s swinging the bat well for Chicago is Jose Abreu. He has been on fire at the plate of late, batting .367 (11-of-30) with four homers and seven RBIs in his last seven games. Abreu’s stellar play has been one of the few bright spots for the White Sox this season, with the first baseman leading the team in homers, RBIs and hits this campaign.
Betting on the Texas Rangers (60-60)
There’s just no stopping Texas right now. The Rangers stretched their unbeaten run to four games with a heart-stopping 9-8 win over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night. Nomar Mazara drove in five runs, including a tie-breaking three-run blast in the fifth inning to help the Rangers reach .500 for the first time since July 15.
The Rangers will look to extend their winning streak even further when they lock horns with the White Sox in an immediate rematch tonight. Starting for Texas in the second game of this three-game set is Andrew Cashner (7-9, 3.32 ERA). He was superb in his last start against the Houston Astros, allowing just two runs on six hits in seven innings of work. The Rangers couldn’t turn Cashner’s strong performance into a victory, however, as they suffered a gut-wrenching 2-1 loss. It won’t get any easier for Cashner as he’ll next face his bogey team – the White Sox. He’s 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA in three career outings against Chicago.
As for the offense, the Rangers are feeding off a hot Adrian Beltre right now. The third baseman is batting .440 (11-of-25) in his last seven games with two homers and nine RBIs. Another guy who’s sizzling at the plate right now for the Rangers is Elvis Andrus. He’s 11-of-28 in his last seven outings with a homer and five RBIs. Andrus will be licking his chops at the prospect of facing James Shields as he is batting .406 in his career against the White Sox starter with a couple of RBIs to boot.
Writer’s Prediction
The Rangers (-200) keep the momentum going with a 6-3 win.
