Betting on the Cincinnati Reds (41-58)
Luis Castillo will have the ball for the Reds tonight at the Bronx. Castillo was roughed up in the first inning of his last start, getting tagged with three earned runs in the opening frame by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He did settle eventually, though, allowing just one more earned run the rest of his six-inning outing of that 12-2 loss at home on Jul. 20.
Castillo is 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA in six starts this year with that lone victory coming in a strong performance in a 7-0 victory in Arizona on Jul. 8 in which the righty tossed 6.2 scoreless innings while fanning eight hitters in the process.
Up against a lefty in the Yankees’ Jordan Montgomery later tonight, the bats of Scott Schebler and Zack Cozart will be tested once again. Schebler is batting .289 against lefties this season to go along with five homers and 13 RBI’s. Cozart, for his part, is .400 against southpaws, including three home runs and nine doubles.
Betting on the New York Yankees (51-46)
After a four-game stint in the Seattle Mariners’ lair that ended with a 6-4 win on Sunday, the Yankees return home for the first of their nine-game homestand, beginning with a showdown with Cincy tonight.
The Yankees will parade Jordan Montgomery on the mound. Montgomery suffered his first loss in nine starts on Jul. 19, when he surrendered six earned runs on seven hits in six innings of a 6-1 road loss to the Minnesota Twins. While that was Montgomery’s first loss in a long while, the Yankees are 0-4 in the lefty’s last four starts. Montgomery should like his chances of getting a W against a Reds team that is 2-8 in its last 10 against lefty starters.
As for the offense, the Yankees are feeding off a hot Didi Gregorius right now. The shortstop is 16-for-42 (.381) with four homers and six RBI’s in 11 games since the All-Star break.
Writer’s Prediction
