2016 Clemson Tigers Football Preview

Team Strengths:

Clemson is one of the favorites to win the national title with odds of +650 to do it. That’s the second shortest odds among all schools for this upcoming season. It’s hard not to consider Clemson as a top contender this season.

Back to lead the team is Heisman Trophy-finalist and quarterback Deshaun Watson, who masterminded Clemson’s offense that ranked 16^th last season in points (37.5 PPG) and 10^th in total yards per game (510.4). Wayne Gallman is also back following a season in which he led the Tigers in rushing yards (1,527) and rushing scores (13).

The defense took a hit over the offseason, losing starters like Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd and cornerback Mackensie Alexander but molding the unit into another fearsome bunch shouldn’t be too much of a problem for Brent Venables, considering the fantastic job he had done last season, wherein he had to work with a stop unit that lost nine starters.

Team Weaknesses:

Clemson is a team with not many holes to pick on. That being said, the Tigers shouldn’t overlook their special team that was only mediocre last year. Clemson was just 118^th in punt returns yards per game (4.2) and 85^th in kickoff returns yards per game (57.7).
