Betting on the Clemson Tigers (-27)
Record: 4-0 Overall / 3-0 Conference
No one has touched the Tigers so far this season. In their latest show of force, the Tigers obliterated the No. 7 Miami Hurricanes at home last Saturday, 42-17. Clemson is simply on a higher level right now than any team in the nation, and that has a lot to do with their quarterback and future NFL first-round pick, Trevor Lawrence, who’s been playing as smooth as his locks. Lawrence had 292 passing yards and three touchdowns against Miami on 29-of-41 completions. He’s also kept alive his streak of pick-less passes to extend it to 342. Lawrence can continue having success through the air this week against Georgia Tech’s defense that’s just 10th in the ACC with 259.5 passing yards allowed and has only come away with three interceptions. Clemson’s defense is also poised to have a field day against the error-prone Yellow Jackets, who have already turned the ball over 12 times in four games. Considering how great Clemson is in turning possessions into points, Lawrence and the Tigers could rack up enough points early and blow out Georgia Tech.
Clemson, which is also allowing just 17.7 points per game, is 5-5 against the spread in its last 10 games overall.
Betting on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (+27)
Record: 2-2 Overall / 2-1 Conference
The Yellow Jackets prevented a three-game losing skid by taking down the Louisville Cardinals at home last week, 46-27. The win came after back-to-back losses to the UCF Knights and the Syracuse Orange and restores some much-needed confidence in Georgia Tech ahead of its showdown with the top-ranked team in the nation. Quarterback Jeff Sims threw for 249 passing yards and two touchdowns on 11-of-21 completions and also ran for 64 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. He is unlikely to have as big of a breathing room in the pocket or space to run against Clemson, but it’s still good for Georgia Tech to have a quarterback who’s athletic enough to evade initial pass rushers. The pressure is on the Yellow Jackets’ offensive line, which has been fantastic so far this season. In fact, the Yellow Jackets are tops in the ACC with just two sacks allowed. That same offensive line is also largely responsible for Georgia Tech’s robust rushing attack that’s averaging 213.75 yards per game to go with 10 rushing touchdowns.
The over is 4-0 in the Yellow Jackets’ last four games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
Clemson wins, 44-21.
