Betting on the Cleveland Indians (95-57)

Moneyline: -141

There’s just no stopping Cleveland right now. The Indians stretched their unbeaten run to four games with a thrilling 6-5 win over the Angels on Wednesday. The AL Central champions have now won 26 of their last 27 games as they inch ever closer to the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the majors.

The Indians will look to keep the momentum going when they lock horns with the Angels in their series finale today. Starting for Cleveland in this pivotal showdown is Danny Salazar (5-6, 4.52 ERA). The 27-year-old will be making his first start since September 5, when he yielded four runs on one hit and two walks in only two-thirds of an inning against the Chicago White Sox. Salazar is 1-1 in his career against the Los Angeles Angels, with the right-hander posting a 3.74 ERA in four starts. He has recorded 26 strikeouts and allowed 10 walks against the Angels during that span.

Salazar can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the Indians hitters to contribute on the offensive end as well. Expected to lead Cleveland in that department is Edwin Encarnacion. He leads the Indians not only in homers but also in RBIs and on-base percentage this season. Encarnacion’s got a good eye as well, placing second in the American League in walks.

Betting on the Los Angeles Angels (76-75)

Moneyline: +131

Pitching for the Angels in this critical contest is Parker Bridwell (8-2, 3.71 ERA). The 26-year-old rookie is fresh off his first scoreless outing since July 5, throwing six shutout innings in his last start against the Texas Rangers. Bridwell, who has recorded a 4.80 ERA in three September starts, will be facing the red-hot Cleveland Indians for the first time in his career. That won’t faze Bridwell and the Angels, though. They are 16-2 in games Bridwell has pitched this season.

As for the offense, the Angels are feeding off a hot Justin Upton right now. The left fielder is batting .348 (8-of-23) in his last seven games with four homers and five RBIs. He’s hitless, though, in six career at-bats against Danny Salazar. One guy who has had some success against the Cleveland starter is Kole Calhoun. He is 3-of-9 in his career against the Dominican hurler with two homers and three RBIs.

Writer’s Prediction

The Angels (+131) edge past the Indians, 5-3.
