Betting on the Delaware Blue Hens (1-0)
The Blue Hens opened up 2017 moving past neighbor, Delaware State, with a 22-3 thumping, giving their new coach, Danny Rocco, a great debut.
It was from an easy victory, though, as they mostly trailed in a low-scoring affair, and wasn’t able to put points on the board until the third quarter. Fortunately, as soon as they scored, everything became smooth-sailing.
Quarterback Joe Walker was a shaky 13-for-26 in his throws, but he was able to tally a career-high 192 yards, along with tossing one touchdown. His key receiver, Diante Cherry, was the beneficiary of the big performance, as Cherry put up 83 yards and one TD grab in just four catches (20.7 yards per catch). It then continues on the ground attack, with their number one back, Thomas Jefferson, gaining 102 yards on 5.3 yards per carry.
Obviously, Walker, Cherry, and Jefferson, are three main weapons of the offense, and we should continue seeing them be a big part of the scoring as the season goes along.
The defense didn’t get left behind. They held DSU to just 224 total yards and a lowly 3-for-13 conversion on third down situations.
Virginia Tech won’t be an easy foe, and it’s likely that we see coach Rocco and his boys get pummeled. However, just as we’ve always said, it’s good to have a win, especially a rout, before you go against a superior opponent.
Betting on the Virginia Tech Hokies (1-0)
It was a tiring Week 1, but the Hokies are certainly going to take it. They edged out West Virginia, 31-24, after exchanging leads for the whole contest.
The headline for that Virginia Tech win should have this name: Josh Jackson. The freshman lit up the Mountaineers defense with his arm and feet, as he threw for 235 yards and a touchdown (15-for-26 passing) and also ran for 101 yards and a score on 9.2 yards per carry.
Because he’s a dual-threat QB at VT, with a really explosive style of play, brace yourselves for the pouring of Michael Vick comparisons.
Jackson wasn’t alone in the offense in performing, though. He has quickly established that he and key receiver Cam Philipps can have great chemistry. Philipps, who caught seven passes for 138 yards and a TD on Thursday, also appeared to be more than ready in taking over the role left by Isiah Ford, VT’s top wideout in the last three seasons.
On defense, the Hokies were hot-and-cold. Although they got to he QB nine times (two were sacks), had five tackles for loss, and disrupted nine passes, they gave up three passing TDs and 221 yards on the ground (6.3 per rush).
Writer’s Prediction
VT should have no problem taking this one, 36-13.
