Betting on the DePaul Blue Demons (+16)
Record: 10-8 Overall/1-7 Conference
DePaul is having a hellish start to conference play. The Demon Deacons have won just once in their first eight games against Big East teams this season. The last time they were on the court, the Demon Deacons absorbed a 60-47 road loss at the hands of the Creighton Bluejays last Saturday. They also lost to Villanova on Jan. 8 on the road, 79-64. Their lone loss so far against Big East teams was at the expense of a decent Seton Hall Pirates on Jan. 13 at home, 96-92. In this upcoming rematch against Villanova, DePaul leading scorer Javon Freeman-Liberty might not be available due to a groin injury. He was absent in the last few Demon Deacons games due to a groin issue. If he is available, he’ll be a headache for Villanova, which he torched for 34 points on 10/17 shooting from the field the first time around. DePaul will turn to their solid rebounding to slow down Villanova.
The Demon Deacons are 5-1 against the spread in their last six games as the road team versus Villanova.
Betting on the Villanova Wildcats (-16)
Record: 14-5 Overall/7-2 Conference
Unlike DePaul, the Wildcats are having fun out there. After suffering a 57-54 home loss to the Marquette Golden Eagles, Jay Wright’s boys took down the Georgetown Hoyas on the road last Saturday, 85-74. Villanova’s red-hot offense was too much for the Hoyas. The Wildcats shot 53.6 percent from the field, posted a 61.6 effective field goal percentage, and went 9/31 shooting from the field. Villanova owns the best offense in the Big East, ranking first in the league with 113.9 points per 100 possessions and also tops in 2-point and free-throw shooting percentages. Look for the Wildcats to continue shooting well against DePaul’s defense that has been rolled over and over by opponents this season. The Demon Deacons are 211st in the nation with 71.3 points allowed per game and 11th in Big East play with league opponents shooting 39.9 percent from behind the arc. The Wildcats certainly took advantage of that lousy DePaul defense when they shot 52.1 percent from the field in the first meeting.
Villanova is 8-2 against the spread in its last 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Villanova wins, 88-73.
